Summer Internships

January 3, 2015  CALL FOR APPLICANTS: SUMMER 2015 UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIPS

Thanks to the generosity of his family and to honor the foremost pioneer in the field of aging policy, we are pleased to announce the Robert N. Butler Student Intership Program for Columbia University third and fourth-year students with a strong interest in lifecourse/lifespan and aging research and policy.  With this ten-week summer internship program, the Columbia Aging Center seeks to inspire talented students to become part of a vital pipeline of future leaders who are able to master the challenges societies and individuals must face as the world’s citizens live longer lives. Our Robert N. Butler Interns will have rare access to the Columbia Aging Center’s diverse scholars, an intellectual hub of the field. Over the course of the 10-week summer internships, students will develop skills and acquire knowledge that will benefit them in pursuit of future studies and careers. Training will include behavioral and social science research, policy analysis on specific issues, literature reviews, data collection, engagement with local businesses and organizations, event planning, and more.

Details: The 10-week internships begin on or around June 1, 2015. Positions are 20 hours per week. Summer internship stipend is $4,000.

Eligibility: Undergraduates enrolled at Columbia in their third or fourth year as of January 30, 2015. Please see our FAQ.

 

Application submissions are to include the following:

1.    CV (1 page)
2.    Official Columbia University transcript
3.    Personal statement about career objectives and future academic plans (200 words)
4.    Short essay (1 page) on the future impact you plan to make on geroscience and/or aging policy.
5.    Two letters of recommendation submitted by the referrer directly to: cmh2197@columbia.edu. These letters should be written by someone who can comment on your academic/professional performance and pursuits, character and maturity such as a professor, advising dean, or work/volunteer supervisor. Each letter of recommendation may be submitted either on letterhead or in an email and must be sent directly from the individual who writes it. Please advise your letter writer of the January 30 deadline.  NB. You must include the names, phones and emails of your reference writers in your cover email. We will notify you if your application is incomplete.

Please compile the components in 1-4 above into one PDF document. Save the document using the following format: LASTNAME_BUTLERSUMMER2015.pdf. For item 5, in your cover email be sure to provide the name, phone and email address of your two reference writers.  All application materials must be submitted by January 30, 2015, 5 p.m. EST via email to cmh2197@columbia.edu. Finalists will be contacted in the second half of February 2015 and invited for an interview prior to final selection in March 2015.
