Linda Fried: From Redefining Aging to Spearheading Research on Climate and Health

March 3, 2022-- Columbia Aging Center Director, Linda P. Fried, MD, MPH is featured for her leadership in launching the Mailman School’s Climate and Health Program and continued initiatives to protect the public’s health in face of climate change. Dr. Fried shares about her experience in advocating for this program, and in supporting expanding this research work nationally and globally in face of climate change apathy in the early 2010s. In addition, as a world-renowned geriatrician and epidemiologist, Dr. Fried sees the connection between her work in frailty and aging complicated by extreme weather events like heat waves that prevent people from living longer and healthier lives. Dr. Fried also notes the issue of increasing syndemics between infectious diseases like COVID-19, frailty and aging, and climate change and aims to enhance collaboration between climate scientists and epidemiologists across Columbia.
